SCHEDULE UPDATE: The SIUE-Southern Indiana series has shifted due to the potential for poor weather conditions Saturday evening. The three-game Ohio Valley Conference series now will be a doubleheader Friday beginning at 2 p.m. followed by a single game Saturday at 1 p.m.
HITTING STREAKS:
Lexi King enters the Southern Indiana series with a nine-game hitting streak.
Paige Rocha is next at six games. King has reached base safely in 14 consecutive contests.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Rocha was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week this past week. The Platte City, Missouri, native drove in the game-winning run with a triple Saturday to secure the OVC series win against Tennessee State. She also blasted a home run and went 3 for 3 in game one Saturday as the Cougars blanked Tennessee State 8-0 in six innings. For the week, she batted .571 with four extra-base hits and a 1.143 slugging percentage.
.400 CLUB: SIUE's one-two punch of Rocha and
Lexi King both are batting better than .400 this season. King leads the team with a .412 average followed by Rocha's .406.
TOTAL GAME: Rocha is second in the OVC in total bases (72) after hitting her team-leading fifth home run earlier this week at Purdue.
ANOTHER STRIKEOUT FOR THE PITCHING STAFF:
Kelsey Ray leads the Cougars with 77 strikeouts in 98 2/3 innings pitched this season. Ray also is second in the OVC in strikeout-to walk ratio at 4.28
SHOUT OUT SHUTOUT: SIUE leads the OVC in shutouts with seven and is ranked 73rd nationally in that category.
DOUBLE TROUBLE: King added three doubles this past weekend against Tennessee State and now has an OVC-leading 13. She also is ranked No. 13 nationally in that category and 16th nationally in doubles per game (0.36).
MORE DOUBLES:
Emma Neuman is tied with Rocha for the fourth-most doubles per game (0.29) in the OVC.
WHAT A SAVE: Ray has three saves this season and is ranked 26th nationally in saves.
SERIES VS. SOUTHERN INDIANA: SIUE is 51-22-1 all-time against USI, dating back to 1984.
START OF AN ERA: After spending nearly the last decade as an assistant coach in the Big Ten Conference,
Ben Sorden was tapped as the new leader of the SIUE softball program. Sorden comes to SIUE after holding positions at Michigan State and Indiana, helping the pitching staffs to national honors and top-notch results. The Lone Tree, Iowa, native most recently spent five seasons at Michigan State, where the Spartans sported a 2.38 earned run average and a 1.11 WHIP over 350 innings of play.
