MURRAY, Ky. – Zoe Schafer rocketed a first-inning solo home run as SIUE softball won Sunday's nightcap over Murray State 1-0 at Racer Field.

SIUE, 21-18 overall and 11-7 in the Ohio Valley Conference, dropped the opener 2-0 to Murray State, which is 15-33 overall and 5-13 in the OVC.

"She crushed it," said SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery. "It was dead center field. It was a definitely a no-doubter. I think it hit the road. She definitely got all of it."

Schafer hit her team-leading eighth home run of the season.

"It was good to see her unload and put a good swing on one," said Montgomery.

Corrina Rivas earned the victory in game two with 4 2/3 innings pitched. She improved to 5-6. Emily Ingles entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth inning, gaining a strikeout to end the inning. She completed the SIUE shutout with two more scoreless innings for her first save of the season.

"That was good for Emily's confidence," said Montgomery, noting that Ingles took the loss in game one.

One area of SIUE's game that shined was defense. SIUE was errorless Sunday. Montgomery noted the play of center fielder Alyssa Heren making a game-saving catch as well as infielder Bailley Concatto who started a rally-killing double play in the sixth inning of game two.

SIUE had two hits in game one and added six in game two. Montgomery said that as the Cougars make their way home for their final regular season games next weekend the offense needs to step up.

"We have to hit," said Montgomery. "You can't expect your pitchers to throw shutouts all the time."
