CHARLESTON, Ill. – SIUE senior Haley Chambers-Book tossed her 10th complete game shutout of the season Saturday as SIUE and Eastern Illinois split a doubleheader at Williams Field.
SIUE won the opener 6-0 with four RBIs from senior Allison Smiley. EIU grabbed the nightcap 7-4 despite a late charge from the Cougars.
The eight-team tournament field for next week's Ohio Valley Conference Tournament was set with the third-seeded Cougars taking on the sixth-seeded Eastern Kentucky Colonels at 10 a.m. Wednesday. SIUE enters the OVC Tournament with a 38-11 record and a 13-5 record in league competition. EIU completed the regular season 27-19 overall and 10-5 in the OVC.
"I was happy with how we performed in the first game today," said SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery. "In the second game, we started competing in the last two innings."
Chambers-Book tossed her third one-hit shutout of the season in the opener. The Cougar left-hander, the No. 14 pick the NPF draft last month, enters the collegiate postseason with a 1.19 earned run average.
"She was really good today," said Montgomery. "I hated that she left the no-hitter but we got flat in the last inning."
Smiley turned in a big day at the plate with two doubles and a home run during the doubleheader. It was her first home run of the season.
"I had a good warmup and was seeing the ball well," she said. "That transferred over to the game."
Montgomery reflected on the regular season as the Cougars prepare for their first OVC Tournament game Wednesday.
"It is a clean slate," said Montgomery. "I'm very happy with our 38-11 season. The kids played hard and worked hard. We have great team chemistry. When we play at the level we are capable of, we're pretty good."
Smiley agreed.
"We pick each other up when something is not going our way," she noted. "Now it's tournament time. This is the fun time of the season. This is what we have worked for all year."
