Cougars Take First at SEMO Dual

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The SIUE men's and women's track and field teams won the combined score at the SEMO dual Friday night for the first time in school history behind many impressive performances.

"We had a great meet today, winning for the first time in six years," Head Coach Scott Block said. "I am excited for the team and coaching staff and we look forward to the rest of the season."

The day began with the throwing events where three Cougars set personal records in the weight throw. Austin Lynch threw a 15.91 meter PR for the men. In the shot put, Martinus Mitchell threw a PR of 16.66m.

"Martinus had a long overdue PR in the shot put today," Block added. "He has been working hard to make his senior year special, and he is setting himself up for success.

The women saw Claire Nolan throw a PR of 16.04m, which was good for first in the weight throw. Catherine Jakich threw a PR of 14.61m to place second.

"Claire made a big step today winning the weight throw while setting anew PR in the process," Block said.  

In the jumps, SIUE freshmen DeVonte Tincher won the triple jump with a PR of 45-03.50. Tincher also placed first in the long jump (23-02.50). Justin White took home first in the high jump with a clearance of 6'0.75.

For the women, Brittney Gibbs placed first in the triple jump (39-09.25) and Nichyria Byrd took home first in the long jump (19-01.50). Deborrah Blackburn finished first for the Cougars in the high jump (5'0.1).

The sprints saw the cougars take first in the men's 200m, where Nylo Clarke won with a time of 22.82. The SIUE 4x400 team (Dalton Oakes, Matt O'Connor, Collin Brown, Kevin Campbell) finished first, running a time of 3:31.21.

Bobby Kaluza placed first for the men in the 55m hurdles (7.83).

For the men, Landon Skelly finished first in the 3,000 meter run (8:58.30).

Haley Miller took home first for SIUE in the women's mile run with a time of 5:23.54. Jalea Paslay ran an indoor PR in the 800 (2:27.38).

The Cougars will be back in action Jan. 13 at the Illini Classic.
