CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – SIUE men's track and field placed third in the Ohio Valley Conference championship with a strong team effort.
Greg Block won the Ohio Valley Conference crown in the hammer throw with a mark of 181-9.
"I am proud of our athletes and coaches," said Head Coach Eileen McAllister. "It was a fantastic all-around effort. Conditions were less than ideal but it's all about competing with grit and no excuses."
La'Derrick Ward competed in the triple jump during day two after winning the long jump a day before. He claimed second place, setting a personal best and breaking his own SIUE record with a jump of 50-2.
Ahmad Evans placed second in the 200 meters after setting a personal best in the preliminaries. His crossed the finish line in 21.11 seconds. Evans also placed sixth in the 100 meters and was a member of the second-place 4x400 and third-place 4x100 meter relay teams.
Freshman Martinus Mitchell tossed a 48-10.75 heave in the shot put, earning him a second-place finish. Block placed third in the same event with a mark of 46-8.
Darius Smith earned points for the team in four events, the 100, 200, the 4x100 and the 4x400 meter relay. He finished fourth in the 200 and fifth in the 100.
Completing the men's 4x100 meter relay team was Justin Agustin and Dalton Oakes. Oakes also placed 5th in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.58.
Derek Drew, competing in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles, placed third with a big personal best time of 52.77. He was also a member of the second place 4x400 meter relay.
Julian Harvey, fresh off of his victory in the high jump in day one, placed fourth in the triple jump. Mladen Hristov placed sixth in the same event.
Keith Meyer placed fifth in the 5K in a time of 14:51.91, tying his personal best.
At the end of the meet, the men's team placed third with 141.5 total points.
"This is our most well rounded team," said McAllister. "We had contributions from all events. It was fun watching it all come together this weekend."
The qualifying lists for the NCAA West preliminaries will be released Thursday at noon.
