EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Milwaukee scored twice in the second half and came back for a 2-1 victory over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in men's exhibition college soccer.
The Cougars opened in exhibition season at Korte Stadium by scoring the first goal of the game at 34:00. Chris Anzalone finished a shot from seven yards out on a pass from Jack Twellman. It was Twellman who set up the play by slipping past his defender near midfield and then crossing the ball just before entering the 18-yard box.
SIUE recorded just four shots in the first half and seven overall in the game. Milwaukee was the offensive aggressor with 16 shots overall.
SIUE coach Kevin Kalish started seven players Wednesday who either were not yet Cougars or sat out last season. It made for a lot of new faces to get the season started.
"We got what we wanted out it. We'll watch the film and see where we need to improve," said Kalish.
The Panthers didn't get on the scoreboard until 60:37 when Andrew Wiedabach connected on a header from five yards away from Eric Frazier, who led all players with six shots in the contest.
Milwaukee took the lead at 75:26 when Evan Bartzis scored on a cross from eight yards out, taking an Aaron Gibbons pass.
Both teams split time among a pair of goalkeepers. John Shakon started for the Panthers and was replaced in the second half by Sam Alexander. SIUE's Scott Meyer recorded six saves in his first-half appearance. Nick Collico made three saves in the second half for SIUE.
"It's good to see what you need to work on," noted Kalish, whose team has been practicing just four days. "That was mission accomplished for this evening." SIUE's next action is Saturday against UIC (Illinois-Chicago) against the 11th-ranked Flames. Game time is 7 p.m. at Korte Stadium.
