Box Score

May 3, 2002

ROMEOVILLE - Jenny Esker drove home a run and scored the winning run as Southern Illinois University moved into the championship round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Championships.
SIUE, 48-9 and ranked No. 2 in the USA Today/NFCA NCAA Division II poll, edged Lewis 2-1 on Saturday. The Cougars now play Sunday at noon against Southern Indiana, who advanced through the consolation bracket with a 1-0 win over Lewis. Southern Indiana must sweep a doubleheader from SIUE on Sunday otherwise SIUE will win its first GLVC softball title since joining the league in 1996.
The GLVC champion joins Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Ashland (Ohio) and West Virginia Conference champ West Virginia Wesleyan as teams with automatic bids into next week's NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships.
SIUE won its third straight 2-1 decision and fifth straight game overall, defeating Lewis on the Flyers' home field.
After Lewis took a 1-0 lead in the second, SIUE answered back in the bottom half of the inning. Veronica Schmidt (Westmont) doubled to left field and scored two outs later on a bunt single by Esker.
Esker opened the fifth inning with a double to right field off Lewis reliever Mary Jaszczak. Valerie McCoy (Bethalto) followed with a single through the infield, scoring Esker for the eventual game-winner.
