TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -
Piper Montgomery doubled home two runs in the bottom of the seventh Saturday night as SIUE softball defeated UAB at the Crimson Classic.
The Cougars have one more contest left at the Crimson Classic. They face Furman in a rematch at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
Down 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh against UAB, SIUE's bats came alive. Lauren Yslava poked a single to right center field.
Kaylynn Salyars doubled down the right field line, putting two runners in scoring position for Montgomery.
The Cougar senior delivered with a gap shot to right center, plating Yslava and Salyars for the victory.
SIUE is now 6-9 for the season while UAB dropped to 9-10.
McKayla Anderson went the distance for the Cougars. She yielded 11 hits in her second victory of the season.
Earlier in the day, host Alabama found itself backtracking late against the Cougars in a 7-4 contest.
Alabama was ahead 7-0 in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, SIUE's
Kiana Villa worked out of the jam and kept the game alive for the Cougars.
The Crimson Tide came into the game having win six straight games in five or six innings.
This time, not only did Alabama not equal that feat, the Cougars pushed back with four runs before it was over.
Anna Henderson collected an RBI groundout that scored Yslava.
Juztyne Torres followed with a two-RBI single to right field that scored
Raegan Duncan and
Harley Limberger.
The Cougars pressed further in the seventh. When Salyars was looking to sacrifice bunt, Alabama catcher Marlie Giles threw the ball away, allowing
Abby Harvell to score.
No. 22-ranked Alabama improved to 13-6.
Avery Arwood took the loss for the Cougars.
