EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Southeast Missouri won a pair of low-scoring Ohio Valley Conference contests against SIUE softball Saturday, defeating the Cougars 3-0 and 3-2 at Cougar Field.
The same two teams meet up once more Sunday for a 1 p.m. series finale. SIUE now stands 9-16 and 1-4 in the OVC while SEMO holds a 8-17 mark overall and 3-2 in the OVC.
"Unfortunately, we couldn't get anything going in the first game," said SIUE Head Coach
Ben Sorden. "In the second game, I liked our battle. We were a little sharper."
SIUE collected seven hits in game one but did not plate a runner. Lauren Yslava had three hits for the Cougars while
Paige Rocha added two.
Kelsey Ray took the loss despite yielding just six hits over 5 1/3 innings. Maddie Carney tossed the final four innings for the win in game one and grabbed a save with the final two outs in game two for Southeast Missouri.
In game two,
Sydney Baalman went the distance for the Cougars. A pair of unearned runs in the first inning and an infield hit that drove home a run proved to be the different for the Redhawks.
Anna Henderson led the Cougars in game two with RBI singles in the first and sixth innings.
Rocha added two more hits in game two and now has an 18-game hitting streak.
"Paige is a special player. I have to say that every week," Sorden added.
The Cougars aim to turn their fortunes around Sunday.
"We have to rally, dig down and find a way to win tomorrow," said Sorden.
