DELAND, Fla. - Back-to-back home runs by
Grace Lueke and
Lauryn Yslava provided some excitement for the SIUE softball team Saturday, but the Cougars dropped a pair of games at the Frank Griffin Classic.
SIUE, now 1-3, fell in game one 7-3 to Binghamton and 9-5 in game two to Boston University.
"In the first game, if we play clean defense, it's a completely different game," said SIUE Head Coach
Ben Sorden.
Four of seven Binghamton runs were unearned. Both teams had three errors, but Binghamton took advantage of Cougar miscues.
Paige Rocha led SIUE in game one with two hits and is now hitting .467 (7-15) through four games.
"
Harley Limberger is doing fantastic for us off the bench," added Sorden.
SIUE and Boston University went back and forth in the Cougars' second game of the day,
The Terriers scored three times in the first three innings, and the Cougar erupted for four runs in the top of the fourth inning.
After back-to-back singles from
Emma Henderson and
Anna Henderson,
Piper Montgomery successfully moved the duo over on a sacrifice bunt. Lueke then hit her 21st career home run to tie the score 3-3. Yslava followed up with a solo shot as both blasts went over the left-center field fence.
Boston University, 3-0, regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and added three insurance runs in the sixth.
"Boston U is a very good team, and you can see why they were in an NCAA Regional last year," said Sorden.
SIUE closes out the Frank Griffin Classic at 9 a.m. CT Sunday against Binghamton.
"We still have some work to do, and we're still figuring some things out," said Sorden.
