Austin Peay Upends Cougars 74-59

Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Austin Peay finished with four players in double figures and shot 50 percent for the game Monday in a 74-59 victory over SIUE men's basketball at First Community Arena.

The Governors improved to 10-6 overall and 6-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference.

SIUE dropped to 6-7 overall and 4-3 in the OVC. The Cougars have just a short turn-around before they face Eastern Illinois Tuesday at 5 p.m. in a makeup contest.

Mike Adewunmi led the Cougar offense with 16 points of 7-of-15 shooting from the field. Sidney Wilson, the reigning OVC Newcomer of the Week, added 12.

SIUE held a 4-0 lead right out of the gate but Austin Peay hit its first pair of three-pointers to take a 6-4 lead.

"We came out with the right mentality right away," said SIUE Head Coach Brian Barone. "Offensively we were pretty aggressive, we loosened them up, and then we had miscommunications right away. That frustrated us."

SIUE, which outrebounded Austin Peay 36-31, shot 35.8 percent from the field for the game and converted 3 of 16 from three-point range in what will be the first of four home games this week at First Community Arena.

Austin Peay used a balanced attack with four starters scoring in double figures, shooting 27 of 54 from the field. Terry Taylor topped the list with 15 points followed by 14 from Mike Peake, 13 from Alec Woodard and 11 from Carlos Paez.

Monday's contest was SIUE's first at home since Dec. 5.

"We haven't practiced in this gym (First Community Arena)," said Barone. "This is our home, and you want to win at home."
