Cougars Finish Nonconference Play at South Alabama

SIUE Cougars (6-6, 0-0 OVC)
vs. South Alabama Jaguars (9-3, 0-0 SBC)

Tuesday, December 21, 7:00 p.m.
Mitchell Center (10,041), Mobile, Alabama

SIUE closed out a perfect home stand with a dominating win Sunday at First Community Arena. The Cougars won their third consecutive game, soaring past the William Woods Owls 84-29. What finished as a blowout, didn't start that way. The teams traded baskets for the first 10 minutes and William Woods had a 15-13 lead after a jumper with 10:33 to play in the half. SIUE seized control at that point, scoring the next 11 points. William Woods didn't score another field goal before halftime and the Cougars finished the first half on a 30-1 run to lead 43-16 at the break. After allowing 16 points at half, SIUE gave up just 13 points in the second half.

SIX PACK
Six nonconference wins are the most for SIUE since it began playing an Ohio Valley Conference schedule in 2011-12.

THOROUGH VICTORY
The 29 points from William Woods is tied for the fewest allowed by SIUE in school history. The 55-point win differential is the largest for the Cougars since SIUE moved to the Division I level.

CLAMPING DOWN
SIUE is now the OVC's best defensive team, allowing a conference-low 64.4 points per game. Cougars' opponents are shooting just .390, which also is the best mark in the OVC.

SHARP SHOOTERS
SIUE knocked down 47 percent of its shots Sunday against William Woods. It marked the seventh time this year that the Cougars have hit at least 45 percent of its shots in a game. SIUE connected on a season-high 52 percent of its shots Dec. 8 vs. Purdue Fort Wayne. Last year, the team's season-best was 58 percent against Tennessee Tech.

CRASHING THE BOARDS
The Cougars lead the OVC at 40.1 rebounds per game, which is 49th in the NCAA. SIUE leads the league in total rebounds at 481, which is good for No. 16 nationally. The Cougars also lead the OVC in offensive rebounds at 13.7 a game, which is 21st in the NCAA. SIUE's rebounding margin at +6.7 is tops in the league.
