Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE women's soccer team defeated Belmont 3-1 in their Ohio Valley Conference opener behind Avery Anderson's goal and assist.
"It's a great way to start the weekend," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. "We beat a very good team who scores a lot of goals."
The Cougars opened up the scoring in the 33rd minute when Andrea Frerker scored her first goal of the season off of a cross from Anderson.
SIUE went into halftime up 1-0.
The Cougars struck early in the first half when Peyton Roehnelt slotted one away with Emily Grahl assisting on the play.
In the 63rd minute Belmont made it a game with a Halle Krebs goal.
SIUE closed out the game in the 68th minute when MacKenzie Litzsinger stole the ball and placed a pass into Anderson, who put it away for her first goal of the season.
"Anderson had a great night for us tonight," Burton added. "She didn't play big minutes, but she was very impactful. It's about making an impact for our team when your number is called."
Juli Rossi finished with seven saves, including an acrobatic kick save in the first half.
The Cougars are back on the road this Sunday when they face Eastern Illinois at 1 p.m.
