CHARLESTON, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Kayla Brown bested the field at the Eastern Illinois Open and nearly set a school record in the process.
Brown, who defeated her nearest competitor by nearly 18 seconds, ran the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 44.98 seconds. It was the second fastest time in school history. Breanne Steffens set the school record back in 2003 with a time of 17:29.
No full scores were announced at the meet. A double dual scoring put SIUE ahead of Millikin and just behind Southeast Missouri State, Southern Illinois and Eastern Illinois.
Aftan Noon was the second fastest runner for SIUE in 19:11.87. She was followed by Rachel Roustio (20:44.48), Heather Hackel (20:47.68), Jamie Nagel (22:16.47), and Elisha Crawley (23:10.56).
The SIUE men had a similar evening to the women in team scoring.
Sean Gosewisch was SIUE's top finisher, placing ninth overall in 26:09.49. He was followed by Aaron Werths (26:32.20), Marc Amarillas (26:53.31), Brad Walwer (28:02.60) and Brandon Stewart (30:00.16).
