Cougars Topple Eastern Kentucky

         EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville won its second straight game Monday with a 54-44 triumph over Eastern Kentucky at the Vadalabene Center.
         Jenny Wuest led all scorers with 16 points for the Cougars. It was SIUE's first victory against an NCAA Division I opponent and the first against a future Ohio Valley Conference opponent.
         "I'm very proud of this win," said SIUE Coach Amanda Levens, whose team improved to 3-16.
         The Cougars survived a slumping first half in which both teams suffered from double-digit turnovers and sub-par shooting. The Lady Colonels, now, 6-11 overall, led at halftime 17-13.
         SIUE would more than double its score in the first five minutes of the second half.
         "Jenny Wuest came up with big plays," said Levens. "And free throws made a difference."
         SIUE was fouled down the stretch after taking the lead for good with 5:16 to play on a jumper by Wuest. The Cougars hit 14 of 23 from the line.
         Ashley Bey turned in a strong performance from the field, hitting 4 of 6 for 12 points and grabbing six rebounds.
         "We found a way to get rebounds," said Levens.
         SIUE outrebounded the Lady Colonels 45-34 with Jessie Stapleton leading the way with 12 boards.
         Kayla Drake powered Eastern Kentucky with 14 points, including three three-pointers as the Lady Colonels tried to make a late charge.
         SIUE now heads to Kenosha, Wis., to take on former Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent UW-Parkside. Game time is 5 p.m. Thursday.
