EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville standout Kayla Brown placed second at her own home meet, leading the Cougars to a sixth-place team finish.
Brown ran the 5,000-meter event in 18 minutes, 20.10 seconds. Kimi Shank, of Missouri Southern, was the champion with a time of 18:01.96.
Missouri Southern edged Pittsburg State for the team title 71-88. Truman State finished third followed by Washington (Mo.), Bellarmine, SIUE and Central Missouri in the 16-team event.
SIUE sophomore Maggie Krall placed 31st overall for the Cougars in 19:43.05. She was followed closely by fellow Cougars Aftan Noon (19:54.33) in 36th place, Kelly Flounders (20:17.02) in 48th place, Stephanie Briggs (20:53.08) in 70th place, Stacey Briggs (21:17.25) in 82nd place, Heather Hackel (21:51.59) in 94th place, and Lindsey Mulvey (22:05.90) in 96th place.
In the men's race, Kyle Cameron paced the SIUE contingent with a 20th place finish overall. His 8,000-meter time was 26:59.17.
Unattached runner Ben Rosario of Big River Running Club was the champion of Border Wars, running a brisk time of 25:02.60. Pittsburg State's MJ Hassballa was the champion among collegiate teams with a time of 25:57.36.
Paradise Valley Community College was the team champion, finishing with four runners in the top 10. Paradise Valley defeated runner-up Pittsburg State 42-61. Host SIUE placed 11th overall with 270 points.
SIUE completes its 2008 season next Saturday at the Evansville Invitational in Evansville, Ind.
