Glover Earns All-American Honors

        EMPORIA, Kan. -- Callie Glover (Bartlett) finished fifth in the hammer throw to earn All-American honors at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Welch Stadium.
        Glover's fifth of six throws travelled 179 feet, 2 inches (54.61 meters). She finished fourth in her flight. There were two flights. Cecilia Barnes, of Cal State Bakersfield, won the event with a throw of 193-6.
        SIUE also had three runners advance to their respective finals.
        Kyle Rose (Kankakee) was the first of the three as he posted the third-fastest 400-meter dash time. Rose posted a school-record time of 46.79 and placed second in his heat. There were three heats. The top finisher in each heat at the next five fastest times advanced to the finals.
        Rose's final will be Saturday at 6:31 p.m.
        Deserea Brown (Flossmoor) broke her own school record in the 400-meter hurdles to qualify for the finals. She ran the event in 60.19, the sixth-fastest preliminary time. The freshman's previous best was 60.86.
        Brown and Tairisha Sawyer (Chicago) placed 10th and 11th, respectively, in the 400-meter dash qualifying. Brown's time was 5.27 with Sawyer just behind at 55.31.
        Sawyer also missed qualifying at 100 meters. Her 200-meter race Friday will be her final chance to earn All-American honors as an individual.
        Brian Taghon (East Moline), an All-American in cross country, ran the fourth fastest preliminary time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. His time of 9:20.85 is more than eight seconds behind his season best. Taghon's finals will be a 5 p.m. Saturday.
