QUINCY - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville picked the wrong time to show up at Pepsi Arena.
Quincy's Phil Gettinger scored a season-high 31 points Thursday as the Hawks defeated the No. 18 Cougars 74-65 in men's Great Lakes Valley Conference basketball.
Gettinger hit 9 of 16 from the field, 2 of 3 from three-point land and 11 of 14 free throws. The Hawks rode Gettinger's back all night, but it was a pair of three-pointers late in the second half by Quincy's Ryan Walker that kept SIUE from making a comeback.
SIUE fell to 18-6 overall and 11-4 in the GLVC. Quincy improved its mark to 15-7 overall and 11-5 in the GLVC.
SIUE's J.B. Jones pumped in 19 points along with three assists and a game-high six steals. Tim Bauersachs was SIUE's leading scorer with 20 points.
The two teams went into the locker room at halftime knotted up 28-28. Quincy came out firing with a 15-2 run to start the second half. SIUE had to play catch-up the rest of the game.
The Cougars later tied the game 53-53 as Tim Bauersachs scored a free throw to complete a three-point play off a floul from Jordan Roth at 5:21.
Just as SIUE tied the game, Quincy fought back as Walker hit a pair of three-pointers. Forced to foul late in the game, Quincy hit 12 of 14 free throws in the final two minutes of the game.
SIUE, which has now lost two straight, heads to Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday. Tip-off time is 7:30 p.m.
